The Science of Beauty

What Is Botox?

Botox® is the brand name for onabotulinumtoxinA — a purified form of botulinum toxin type A that has been used clinically for decades and is one of the most extensively studied aesthetic treatments available. First approved by Health Canada for cosmetic use in the treatment of frown lines, it has since become a trusted standard of care in medical aesthetics globally.
In the context of aesthetic treatment, Botox is used to temporarily reduce the activity of specific facial muscles. By interrupting the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract, it allows the overlying skin to smooth and relax — softening the appearance of expression lines that develop over time through repeated facial movement.
Botox does not add volume, change the structure of the face, or alter your natural features. What it does is give your skin a moment of rest from the repetitive contractions that, over years, etch dynamic wrinkles into the skin’s surface. The result, when done well, is a face that looks like yours — only more rested, more refreshed, and a little more at ease.
“A well-placed Botox treatment does not announce itself. The goal is always for you to look like you — but on your best day.”
The Mechanism

How Botox Works

Your facial muscles contract through a chemical process: nerve endings release a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which travels across the gap between the nerve and the muscle and triggers the muscle to contract. This is how every voluntary muscle movement in the body works — including the expressions your face makes hundreds of times each day.

Over years of repeated contractions, the skin overlying frequently used facial muscles develops creases and lines at the points where the skin folds during expression. These are called dynamic wrinkles — lines caused by movement rather than by loss of volume or skin laxity.
Botox works by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the targeted neuromuscular junction. When a tiny, precise amount is injected into a specific facial muscle, it temporarily prevents that muscle from contracting fully. The overlying skin smooths, the crease softens, and the face takes on a more relaxed and refreshed appearance.
This effect is temporary. Over a period of three to four months on average, the nerve endings naturally regenerate and muscle function gradually returns to normal. The skin resumes its original position. This is why Botox requires repeat treatments to maintain results — it is working with the body’s natural processes, not against them.
Two important points our team always explains at consultation:
First, Botox addresses dynamic wrinkles — lines that appear or deepen with expression. Lines that are present when the face is completely at rest, which are called static wrinkles, may have some improvement with Botox but are primarily addressed through different approaches such as dermal fillers, skin resurfacing, or skin tightening treatments.
Second, results are highly technique-dependent. The dosage used, the specific placement of each injection point, and the balance achieved across different muscle groups all directly determine whether the outcome looks natural or overdone. This is why the experience and clinical judgment of the specialist performing your treatment matters significantly.

Understanding Your Options

Botox vs Dermal Fillers What Is the Difference?

Botox and dermal fillers are both injectable treatments but they work through completely different mechanisms and address different concerns. Confusing the two is extremely common and can lead to clients seeking the wrong treatment for their specific goal.
Botox temporarily relaxes targeted muscles to soften dynamic expression lines — wrinkles caused by movement. It does not add any volume or change the shape of a feature. Dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid or other substances to physically restore volume, smooth static lines, and reshape or define specific facial features such as the lips, cheeks, or chin.
In practice, many clients benefit from both. At consultation, our team will assess your face and explain exactly which treatment, or which combination, addresses what you are hoping to improve. We do not recommend treatments clients do not need.

Why Clients Choose Botox

Benefits of Botox Treatment

Softens Dynamic Expression Lines

Forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet can be significantly softened with well-placed Botox, reducing their visibility at expression and, over time, at rest.

Refreshed Appearance With No Downtime

Most clients return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment. There is no recovery period or visible evidence of treatment for most clients.

Natural-Looking Results When Done Well

Botox applied with the right dosage and precise placement produces results that look relaxed and refreshed, not frozen or noticeably "done."

Preventive as Well as Corrective

Using Botox before deep lines become set in the skin helps prevent the more pronounced lines that develop with years of uninterrupted expression.

Addresses Multiple Concerns in One Appointment

Forehead, brow, eyes, jaw, neck. Multiple areas can be treated in a single appointment, making Botox one of the most time-efficient aesthetic treatments available.

Reversible and Temporary

Botox gradually wears off as the body’s natural nerve regeneration restores muscle function. This makes it a lower-commitment starting point for clients new to aesthetic treatments.

What We Treat

Treatment Areas

At DermEsthetics, we treat the following areas with Botox. Every area is assessed and dosed individually at your consultation — we do not apply standard units across the board.
Forehead Lines
Forehead Lines

What it is

Horizontal lines across the forehead are caused by the frontalis muscle, which contracts each time you raise your eyebrows. Repeated over years, these contractions create visible creases in the overlying skin.

What the treatment does

Botox injected into the frontalis muscle reduces its activity, allowing the horizontal lines to soften. Our team assesses brow position and muscle anatomy before treating this area to avoid unwanted heaviness or lowering of the brow.

Typical dose: Confirmed at consultation
Session spacing: Every 3 to 4 months
Frown Lines
Frown Lines (Glabellar Lines)

What it is

The "11 lines" between the eyebrows appear when frowning, concentrating, or squinting, caused by the corrugator supercilii and procerus muscles. When visible at rest, many clients describe looking permanently cross or tense.

What the treatment does

Botox was first approved for glabellar frown lines, making this the most evidence-backed area of cosmetic Botox use. Injection relaxes the frown pattern, softening the vertical lines progressively.

Typical dose: Confirmed at consultation
Session spacing: Every 3 to 4 months
Crow's Feet
Crow's Feet

What it is

Lines that fan outward from the outer corners of the eyes during smiling or squinting, caused by the orbicularis oculi muscle. This skin is among the thinnest on the face.

What the treatment does

Botox injected precisely into the lateral orbicularis oculi softens the fanning lines without affecting the central or lower portions of the eye ring muscle responsible for blinking.

Typical dose: Confirmed at consultation
Session spacing: Every 3 to 4 months
Brow Lift
Brow Lift

What it is

A chemical brow lift uses small, precisely placed amounts of Botox to achieve a subtle upward shift in brow position without surgery.

What the treatment does

As muscles that depress the brow are relaxed, elevator muscles gain a relative advantage, producing a subtle lift that opens the eye area. A nuanced technique working within a small margin for natural improvement.

Typical dose: Small, precise doses
Session spacing: Every 3 to 4 months
Bunny Lines
Bunny Lines

What it is

Diagonal or horizontal lines on the bridge and sides of the nose when scrunching, created by contraction of the nasalis muscle. Often included alongside forehead and glabellar treatment.

What the treatment does

Small amounts of Botox injected into the nasalis muscle smooth the bunny lines without affecting normal nasal function.

Typical dose: Small amounts per side
Session spacing: Every 3 to 4 months
Lip Lines and Lip Flip
Lip Lines and Lip Flip

What it is

Fine vertical lines around the mouth from repeated pursing. A lip flip uses a small amount of Botox in the upper orbicularis oris to roll the upper lip subtly outward, without adding volume.

What the treatment does

For perioral lines, Botox reduces pursing contractions. For the lip flip, a precise conservative amount produces subtle eversion. Both require careful, conservative dosing in this sensitive area.

Typical dose: Small amounts, conservative
Session spacing: Every 3 to 4 months (lips may metabolize faster)
Chin Dimpling
Chin Dimpling

What it is

An "orange peel" or "cobblestone" texture on the chin caused by chronic hyperactivity of the mentalis muscle.

What the treatment does

Botox injected into the mentalis muscle smooths the chin surface and reduces dimpling, producing a smoother, more even chin contour.

Typical dose: Confirmed at consultation
Session spacing: Every 3 to 4 months
Jawline and Masseter
Jawline and Masseter Slimming

What it is

The masseter is the powerful chewing muscle on each side of the jaw. An enlarged masseter, from genetics or clenching/grinding, creates a wide, square lower face and can cause jaw tension.

What the treatment does

Botox injected into the masseter causes it to gradually reduce in size, tapering the lower face over weeks to months. Can also provide functional relief from grinding and jaw tension.

Typical dose: Higher than most other areas
Session spacing: Every 4 to 6 months
Neck Bands
Neck Bands and Neck Rejuvenation

What it is

The platysma muscle can become more prominent with age, creating visible vertical neck bands and pulling down on the jawline.

What the treatment does

The Nefertiti lift uses Botox along the jawline and platysma bands to reduce downward pull, improving jawline definition and smoothing neck bands. Best for mild to moderate banding.

Typical dose: Multiple injection points
Session spacing: Every 3 to 4 months

Results and Timeline

When will I see results?

Initial softening usually becomes noticeable within 3 to 5 days. The full effect takes up to 10 to 14 days to develop. Assess your final result no earlier than the two-week point.

How long do results last?

For most clients and areas, results last approximately 3 to 4 months on average, with significant individual variation based on metabolism, muscle strength, and dosage.

Will results look natural?

When applied with the right dosage and placement for your anatomy, the result should look like a rested, refreshed version of you. Expression and natural movement remain intact.

Does Botox prevent future wrinkles?

For clients who begin before lines become set at rest, regular treatment can help maintain smoother skin over time by reducing the depth of contractions that deepen dynamic lines.

Individual variation is significant — metabolism, muscle strength, treatment area, dosage, and treatment history all influence duration. Masseter treatments typically last slightly longer (4 to 6 months) while lip and chin areas may metabolize Botox more quickly. Our team will discuss what is realistic for you at consultation.

The DermEsthetics Difference

Why Choose DermEsthetics for Your Botox Treatment

The results of Botox treatment are almost entirely technique-dependent. Dosing decisions, injection placement, the balance achieved between muscle groups, and the post-treatment assessment all directly shape what you see in the mirror three weeks later.
At DermEsthetics, every Botox treatment is delivered by a trained, credentialed member of our medical aesthetics team, working to clinical protocols developed under the oversight of our founder and clinical director, Sadia Tarar, MBBS — an International Medical Graduate with over 25 years of combined medical and aesthetics experience.

Individual Assessment, Every Time

We assess your facial anatomy, muscle activity, and existing lines before making any recommendation. The plan for your face is built around your face, not a standard chart.

Conservative Dosing With Natural Results

We prioritize results that move with your face and reflect your expressions naturally. Our approach is always to start conservatively and adjust rather than to over-treat.

A 2-Week Review as Standard

Our team schedules a review appointment at 2 weeks to assess your result. If a small adjustment is appropriate, we discuss it then. Aftercare does not end when you walk out the door.

Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Botox and what is it made from?
Botox is the brand name for onabotulinumtoxinA, a purified form of botulinum toxin type A derived from Clostridium botulinum bacteria, produced under highly controlled pharmaceutical conditions. The amounts used aesthetically are very small and localized.
Most clients describe each injection as a brief, mild pinching or stinging, very short-lived and well-tolerated without numbing for most clients. Topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand if preferred.
Initial softening is typically noticeable within 3 to 5 days. The full result develops over 10 to 14 days. We ask clients not to assess their result before the 2-week mark.
For most clients and areas, results last approximately 3 to 4 months on average. Masseter treatments typically last 4 to 6 months.
Botox applied with appropriate dosing and placement should not affect natural expression. If you have seen results that look frozen, that reflects a dosing or technique decision, not an inevitable outcome.
Botox temporarily relaxes muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles. Dermal fillers restore volume, address static lines, and reshape features. They are often complementary rather than interchangeable.
Candidacy is based on your skin and goals, not a specific age. Some clients start in their mid-to-late 20s preventively; others begin later when lines become more prominent.
For clients who begin before dynamic lines become deeply set, regular Botox can slow their progression over time by reducing the frequency and depth of the contractions that deepen them.
No. Botox is temporary. Results typically last 3 to 4 months before muscle activity gradually returns as nerve endings regenerate. Regular appointments maintain results.
Botox is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for clients with certain neuromuscular conditions, or for anyone with a known allergy to botulinum toxin or albumin.
Yes. Most clients return to normal activities immediately, with no visible recovery period. Avoid strenuous exercise and heat for 24 hours, and avoid lying flat for the first 4 hours.
Avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and high-dose vitamin E where medically safe, as these can increase bruising risk. Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup and skincare products.
For 24 hours: do not rub the treated areas, avoid vigorous exercise, stay upright for at least 4 hours, and avoid saunas and significant heat. Avoid facial massages for 2 weeks.
Often yes. Botox and dermal fillers are frequently combined in the same appointment. Botox can also be performed alongside laser treatments, facials, and other services. Your specialist will advise on timing at consultation.
